Beyond walls, beyond stereotypes, beyond isolation
A newsletter from Women Beyond Walls - together we can build collective power and amplify voices to end the over-incarceration of women and girls worldwide.
Dear friends,
The Women Beyond Walls team are delighted to be sharing our first newsletter with you. In coming months we will use this newsletter to:
Disseminate global news on efforts being made by individuals and organisations to end the over-incarceration of women and girls worldwide.
Share first-hand stories from inspiring individuals. This will include videos, podcast episodes, guest blogs, interviews and more.
Highlight funding opportunities for organisations working with and/or for women and girls who are/have been incarcerated.
Circulate research, data and insightful new reports - both our own and from other organisations.
Uplift your ideas, events and campaigns to a global audience.
We want this newsletter to be a rich resource for you and the communities you serve!
Some of you will already know us (thank you for your support!) but some of you will be learning about us for the first time (thank you for joining us!).
You can find out more about our values and purpose on our website. We are also on Twitter and Instagram and love to engage in conversation on both - say hello!
Whether you are a long-standing Women Beyond Walls community member or are just discovering us today, here are some great free resources you can access:
Check out the Women Beyond Walls Podcast! This podcast aims to take you beyond tired prison stereotypes to listen to real-life stories from incredible individuals – women with lived experience of the justice system, feminist lawyers, activists and experts. We have just finished the first season of the podcast so there are six incredible guests to hear from: Susan Kigula; Simitie Lavaly; Samantha Chong; Jhody Polk; Debbie Kilroy; Lady Unchained.
Read our 2021 exploratory report, ‘Forgotten By Funders’, on the challenges of resourcing work with and for incarcerated women and girls worldwide. It is also available in Spanish. Read a summary of some of issues raised in the report in an article published in Inside Philanthropy last year.
In 2023 we’d love to profile more of the wonderful work different organisations are doing around the world to end the over-incarceration of women and girls. Check out three of our 2022 ‘Instagram Takeovers’ featuring vital voices from Kenya, Colombia and Uganda.
In our next newsletter we will be:
Inviting you to join us in ensuring women and girls in contact with criminal justice/legal systems are not forgotten, stigmatised or invisiblised on International Women’s Day.
Sharing our 2023 book recommendation list for all those wanting to educate and inform themselves on the issue of women’s incarceration.
Do you have an event, campaign or resource you’d like us to consider sharing in our next newsletter on 15 February 2022? We’d love to hear from you - get in touch!
In the meantime, we wish you all a joyful start to February.
With best wishes,
The Women Beyond Walls team
